CEBU CITY – The SuperCat smashed into a port access ramp at pier one of this city past 8 AM yesterday, Marjorie Brios bared this to DyTR program yesterday. Luz Torrevillas, spokesperson of 2GO shipping line, the Supercat sister company, confirmed this in the same radio interview anchored by Atty. Salva Diputado and Carlito Responte. She said there were 113 passengers bound for this city when the fastcraft slammed into the port.
Torrevillas said that there was “maneuvering malfunction” but did not give details as the investigation was still in progress. A certain Dave Tumulak of the Cebu City Disaster Risk Management Council (DRRMC) was quoted as saying that 17 of the 113 passengers were hurt.
Brios narrated that when the boat was about to berth at pier one it suddenly dashed in full steam from where they were about 30 meters away then bumped into the ramp. At that time, she said, most of the passengers were already standing literary ready to disembark. She said she was okay since she was able to hold on a seat. But she was scared.
She was able to see another Boholano passenger, named Jemaima Pepito, who sustained a wound on her face. She said there were passengers who were foreigners, she added.
Torrevillas, who refused to give details, said that Supercat will shoulder all the costs of hospital expenses of those wounded who were immediately rushed to Chong Hua hospital for treatment.
Another passenger, Rosendo Guingguing, a municipal kagawad of Baclayon town and DyTR’s mainstay anchorman, said that he was surprised why the fastcraft did not berth at its usual area at the port.
He said he was already standing ready to get off when the boat smacked into the pier. His belt was untied and the seat he was holding on destroyed due to the impact of the crash, he said. Guingguing was home safely after he’s travel in Cebu to secure his medical record. (rvo)
