TAGBILARAN CITY – The province of Bohol stands to benefit from “spillover” in terms of tourism when the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum will be held in Cebu city starting in August, regional director Olivia M. Luces of the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) said in an interview after the Provincial Peace and Order Council (PPOC) meeting held at governor’s mansion yesterday.
Though the APEC ministers are not actually be coming here but their families and relatives who may want to see Bohol’s tourist attraction, Luces, who presented the peace and order preparations for the upcoming APEC meeting, said. Preparations of the upcoming APEC meeting considered as “premier forum for facilitating economic growth, cooperation, trade and investments in Asia Pacific region, are underway, she said.
Luces briefed the PPOC meeting presided over by Gov. Edgar Chatto of the said preparations with emphasis on peace and order for the apparent security of the bigwigs of the APEC. APEC is composed of the countries of Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Philippines, Russia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, United States and Vietnam, Luces said.
OCD said that Administrative Order No. 36 creates the National Organizing committee for the APEC meeting and prescribing authority and functions. One of these functions is the security peace and order and emergency preparedness chaired by the Department of Interior and Local Government and co-chaired by Department of National Defense. They shall oversee and direct the overall security preparations for peace and order of the APEC meeting hosted by the Philippines.
The schedules of the APEC meeting are the following: August 12-Sept 8 — 3rd Senior officials related — incharge is the Dept. of Foreign Affairs; Sept 9-11 — Finance Minister meeting — by dept of Finance; Sept 12-13 — Structural Reform meeting — by National Economic Development Authority/DOF; October 8-10 — Transportation Ministerial meeting — by Dept of Transportation and Communications; and Oct. 12-14 —- Energy ministerial meeting — by Department of Energy, OCD said.
It will be recalled that Bohol played host to the 7th Association Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) of Plus three Senior officials meeting on Rural Development and Poverty Reduction sometime in June 2014. Representatives of China and Japan attended the said meeting to show their solidarity to the cause of ASEAN. (rvo)
