CORELLA, Bohol – Mr. Bong Lumain of this town, an enterprising businessman, has launched what he coined as “tree-volution” in Falcata growing to answer the dwindling forest cover in Bohol in accord with P-Noy’s National Greening Program. And his idea bears fruition, not only that he has already set-up SamRose, a 800,000-seedling nursery, in this town, but also it is welcomed by local government units.
Antequera town Mayor Mario Pahang said in an exclusive interview that this may be the answer to idle public land in his turf. And he is convinced with this long-term program could provide work opportunity for his town mates. In fact, tha mayor and forester Nestor Canda, Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer (Penro) signed yesterday at the latter’s office a letter of agreement (LOA) to push for the establishment of falcata (Albizia falcateria) plantation in Antequera.
Under the LOA, DENR provides some PhP200,000 as seed money and the rest, like providing land and seedlings will shoulder by the town and SamRose, respectively. Mayor Pahang said that this is the first of its kind that may be replicated b other municipalities. Lumain said in an exclusive interview that several towns have already started to plant Falcata seedlings provided by him. These include the towns of Catigbian, Calape, Sagbayan, Alburquerque, Carmen and Pilar, Lumain said.
PENRO said that the species is a fast-growing to fill the gap of demand for raw materials for paper and plywood needs. “Falcata plantation is a promising venture anywhere in the country over and above among mitigation (measures) on climate change,” PENRO said.
A hectare of land, for instance, could be planted with 1,600 seedlings with 3-meter distance apart so that other crops could still be grown, Lumain said.
A pacakage of planting Falcata seedlings is offered at PhP30 per seedling, including planting and clearing by his workers. It can yield tons of timber after seven years of harvest.
Brighter prospects for this industry are hoped for since Lumain and company are contemplating to put its wood plant for plywood or veneer purposes in the province someday.
