Dasmarinas City, Cavite – Thousands of residents of Brgy. Agustina, Zone 1 – A and its neighboring barangays, this city, braved the drizzle even as early as six o’clock in the morning last December 25, just to fall in three separate lines as they waited for their turn to receive the gifts from their own benevolent neighbor former Carmen, Bohol Mayor Che Toribio delos Reyes at her annual gift-giving activity at the Delos Reyes Mansion.
People from walks of life like vendors, factory workers, tricycle and jeepney drivers, housewives, or even professionals fill in the lines as they were eager and excited to meet and greet their benefactor and personally accept the well-prepared packs of rice, canned goods, other food items, shirts or dresses and cash in envelops directly from Mayor Che, who did not sleep and instead spent Christmas eve just to supervise the preparation of the day’s event.
Coming out of her room, Mayor Che was all smiles as she dashed to the gate of the Mansion. “ I am so happy to see the hordes of visitors lining up every year here. Today, I expect a longer line or lines because at this early (6 a.m.), it has already stretched up to half a kilometer away along the Emilio Aguinaldo Highway (a national highway that connects Metro Manila and Cavite)”, Mayor Che gaily enthused. We are doing this for almost five years now. And, “I am not tired of doing this”. Giving and sharing part of our blessings to people especially the less fortunate ones, is like doing a great service to God and my fellow men, she said. Mayor Che personally hands out the envelops with cash.
The gift-giving schedule for the delos Reyes family was not only for one day. On the 26th, almost 200 members of the Dasmarinas City Police Office (DCPO) and another 400 traffic enforcers, notwithstanding those coming from other municipalities of Cavite, were also the ones falling in on the same lines for the same purpose.
The same mark of generosity and kind-heartedness was displayed by Mayor Che, when she and her husband Francisco “Sir Kiko” delos Reyes, also distributed packs of Beauche soap, calendars and cash to almost 200 employees at the Tagbilaran City Airport and personnel of the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) and the various airline companies based at the local airport in Bohol in time for the start of the nine-day “Simbang Gabi” earlier on December 16th.
“I believe God chooses me to be his instrument or channel in sharing all these blessings to all who are in need. I feel happy and relieved to see their faces shining with joy and excitement. That’s why “dili jud ko magtagu-tago kon naay mangayo og pinaskohan nako”. Of course, not me! I do not know with others. Ti-aw ba kon ang Ginoo na maoy magtagu-tago nako?, she added with a boisterous laughter, her trademark.
On the 22nd, Mayor Che also led and joined the Christmas party of all the staff, personnel and rank-and-file employees of the now almost 300-strong Beauche International, Inc. workforce at the La Salle Stadium also in Dasmarinas, Cavite, where various expensive gifts and giveaways were given and raffled off for everyone which brought amusement and added more color to the company workers’ get-together.
Jason, a native of Antequera, Bohol, who is now working at the accounting department at Beauche International main office, here said “I could not believe and I have not seen anybody, especially an employer at that, as kind and as generous as Mayor Che”. When I need money to send home to my parents, Mayor Che is always there and willing to lend a hand, no questions asked, no interest imposed. All of us Boholanos working here at Beauche are free of board and lodging. We are all thankful to Mayor Che for this once-in-lifetime opportunity, he said. “We should be forever grateful to her”, he assured.

“At the end of the day, I still believe that humility is the key to sustainability. I always see to it that my feet are on the ground at all times. And I would never forget my humble beginnings of being a barrio lass and a poor Carmenanon or Bol-anon. After all, my principles will always be hard-work, determination and focus not only in business but also in my life in general to be able to help uplift the lives and the lot of others in particular”, Mayor Che concluded.
