ALBURQUERQUE, Bohol – Mayor Efren Tungol of this town has thought of somewhat radical solution to the proliferation of illegal drugs in the province that appeared to be unabated. “Legalize the illegal drugs,” he told DYTR unequivocally in an interview at his office yesterday. He said that just like in the United States of America, the use of marijuana (cannavis) has already been made lawful by the authorities. Anyway, the Philippines is importing, if not imitating, things from the USA.
If the illegal drugs are made legal, there’ll probably be no more illegal trade of these substances since they are now be taxed and consequently the government earns.
He also hinted that legalizing the use of “shabu” if ever feasible should be studied well. All these can be done through legislative acts, he said.
The mayor expressed concern over the prevalence of illegal drugs trade and abuse though his town has negligible drug-related incidents.
It will be recalled that “shabu” worth PhP23.1 million confiscated last year remains the favourite stuff of all illegal drugs used in Central Visayas, Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) earlier said.
“Shabu” (methamphetamine hydrochloride) had 85% among the illegal substances being popularly used, according to PDEA.
“Marijuna” or MJ, derived from “cannavis” plant, came in next with 12.%; Nabuphine HCI, 1.94%; ecstacy, .36%; and cocaine, .24%, according to the PDEA report.
PDEA said that “Shabu” generated an estimated PhP23,123,646 from a total of 3,083.15 grams seized and MJ (plants) – PhP3,411,200 from a total of 1,985.04 grams. The agency’s report include Nabuphine HCI seized with an equivalent amount of Php1,706.00; and ecstacy, PhP6,000.00.
PDEA has identified the routes of these drugs trades usually the point of origins include Manila, Cebu, Samar and Mindanao. Then the illegal drugs found its way to Central Visayas particularly this city, Siquijor, Danao City, Cebu City, Talisay City, Carcar and Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental. Point of what the PDEA’s called “critical” entries are the seaports, airports, mail/parcel system, coastlines and sea vessels. (rvo)
