ALBURQUERQUE, Bohol – Mayor Efren Tungol of this town, about 12 kms from capital Tagbilaran city, said he welcomes the plan, if ever pursued, to utilize the town seaport in preparation for the construction of New Bohol Airport (NBA). In an interview yesterday at his office, Mayor Tungol said that if realized, then it would be helpful for the town since it would bring additional income to the town’s coffer aside from job opportunities.
This came as the plan of having one jetty built at barangay Tangnan, Panglao town, as a landing pad for heavy equipment and earth materials for the airport project got stalled due to opposition mounted by alleged concerned residents. But barangay chairman Cirilo Gatase has questioned the signatures of the oppositors since he was informed that some of those who affixed their signatures have already passed away. This prompted him to call for a public hearing to find out if indeed the signatures of the those who opposed are genuine.
Recently, Mayor Leonila Montero of Panglao town bared that it’s not only one construction firm interested in the construction of a for delivery of construction materials once the planned NBA project starts in this town but also the winning contractor of the airport project.
The mayor showed a copy of the letter from Chiyoda-Mitsubishi Joint Venture, the bid winner of the airport project, asking her office to take action of its request for the jetty in the same area, sitio Tabuan of barangay Tangnan of this town.
The said area is also being eyed by the Ormoc city-based C. Harrison Power Enterprises and Construction Services, which conducted an earlier public consultation/hearing in the said place.
But she said she has yet to respond to the said letter-request of the joint venture saying there has to be consultation first with the officials concerned.
Also, the mayor issued statement that the people, particularly those who opposed the construction of the port in said place, cannot blame her administration for the private-initiated project in jetty construction since the C. Harrison Power Enterprises and Construction Services has yet to submit to her office the entire plan of the said port.
Meanwhile, barangay chairman Gatase said that the schedule another round of public hearing in connection with the port project in his barangay Tangnan was reset to give ample time for the residents to attend.
The barangay official said that another public hearing is also needed to find out the aunthentic signatories of the manifesto opposing the jetty construction. This must be done since he was informed that there were signatures of the dead persons affixed to the manifesto that saw print in a weekly paper, he said. But the main purpose of the public hearing is to inform his constituents of the jetty project. (rvo)
