GETAFE, Bohol – The suspect of the murder of one Ruben Fernandez, said to be a resident of Olango island, Mactan, remained unidentified, police chief PSInps Marcelino Mejias said in an interview yesterday. Ruben Fernandez, 23, was shot to death in island barangay Nasingin of this town on Tuesday afternoon. He was the key suspect of the killing of one Karen Kaye Montebon, 17, an accountancy student of University of San Carlos, who was found dead in her home at Corinthians subdivision, Lapu-lapu City, police said.
Fernandez’ cadaver underwent through a post-mortem procedure at St. Mary’s Funeral Home, in barangay Tugas in this town yesterday morning during Bohol News Today visit.
In separate interview, PCInsp Felino Brunia, Jr. of crime laboratory in Cebu City said that there were two gunshot wounds on the head that were lethal to Fernandez.
There were no slugs or empty shells were found on the spot where Fernandez was shot dead, police said.
According to the police here that Fernandez sister, who is married and residing in Nasingin island, visited the funeral homes but had to get back to the island immediately and then to Olango island to inform their relatives and to raise money to pay for his autopsy.
Some 14 policemen along with SSupt Rey Lyndon Lawas of Lapulapu city police office were on board two motorized boats on their way to Nasingin apparently to arrest Fernandez. After their arrival on the island about few meters away they heard burst of gunfire coming from the crime scene, The Freeman reported quoting Mejias as saying.
The same report said that Fernandez was identified as the one who allegedly barged into the house of Montebon.
Police also got a cue that Fernandez could be the suspect of Motebon’s killing through his live-partner Jenalyn Soon, a close friend of Montebon, Freeman quoted police report as saying. (rvo)
