CITY Mayor John Geesnell “Baba” Yap II yesterday led officials and the people in commemorating the 451st year of Blood Compact, locally known as “Sandugo,” a contraction of “isang dugo,” forged between then native chieftain Datu Sikatuna and Spanish military general Miguel Lopez de Legaspi in 1565.
The celebration also launched the “Saulog” Tagbilaran 2016, a festivity program that attempts to showcase the yearly in mardi gras in May first, the annual feast day in honor of St. Joseph, patron of this city, and the capsule-laying for the multi-million-peso Bohol Friendship Park project.
The mayor said that the park, which perspective and plan have been completed with amphitheatre and life-size Galleon depicting the landing of Legaspi here, is funded to the tune of Php34 million, courtesy of the Tourism, Infrastructure Enterprises Zone Authority (TIEZA). The project would soon commence, the mayor said.
The celebration started with a holy mass, wreath laying and capsule-laying for the planned friendship park located in barangay Bo-ol, where the icons of Sikatuna and Legaspi are located.
A short program followed with the turnover of checks for Emergency Shelter Assistance (ESA) and Cash for Work more than two years after earthquake struck Bohol on October 15, 2013.
Gov. Edgar Chatto and Rep. Rene Relampoagos (1st district), who delivered their respective remarks during the program along with Vice-Gov. Concepcion Lim and City Vice-Mayor Jose Antonio Veloso, Chatto’s brother-in-law, and the city council members were in attendance to the celebration.
In the afternoon, the city presented to the press the 15 hopefuls for the search of Mutya sa Tagbilaran 2016 held at Bohol Tropics Resort owned by the mayor’s family.
Activities and schedules were being prepared for the May first annual city fiesta. These include April 15 – talent contest for the pageant aspirants; April 21 — Artsitique Vision Night; April 22, — Kumbira sa tagbilaran and the start of Novena; April 23 — Bohol Quality Night; April 24 — Saulog Fun Run, Mutya sa tagb ilaran coronation; April 25 — Holy Name university night; April 36 — University of Bohol Night; April 27 — Hyundai Night; April 28 — Du Ek Sam Night; April 29 — Fluvial parade for the patron and Globe Night; Arpil 30 — Saulog festival king and Queen competition; and May first — Saulog Tagbilaran street Dance competition and ritual showdown.
